Repetitive motion and stress injuries are often the main cause of these ailments, including actions such as typing for prolonged periods of sitting in the wrong position on the office chair.
But how do we prevent all these problems? Today we’ll help you organize your workstation so that you can have an ergonomically correct work environment. How to set up an ergonomically correct workstation?
1. Use the correct chair
In an ergonomically correct workstation, it’s essential for those that tend to sit for prolonged periods to use a chair that supports their spine. Otherwise, you’ll suffer from back pain often. It would help if you paid special attention to the following factor of the ergonomic chair you choose:
Height – The height of the chair should be adjusted so that your knees can touch the ground at a ninety-degree angle.
Low back support – The chair should offer support around the belt loop area. If you still feel uncomfortable, you may use a pillow or a bath towel to fill up space.
Armrests – The armrests should be placed below the sitting elbow height. As for the width, it would be best if your arms were close to your body.
Depth – The seat pan should support your legs. It shouldn’t touch the back of your knees either.
2. A proper desk for you to use your keyboard comfortably
Desks should have the correct height so that your arms and wrists can remain at a neutral position. Hence, they should be parallel to the floor.
You can solve most of these problems by getting an adjustable standing desk as they allow you to use the height you feel most comfortable with and modify it in case you need it. Standing desks are especially useful for those that tend to stand for prolonged periods at work.
3. Using an anti-fatigue mat is not a bad idea
An ergonomically correct work environment should make you feel comfortable at all times, even when you’re standing. We recommend using an anti-fatigue mat. They help to reduce the probability of suffering from lower limb disorders.
4. Keyboard and Mouse
The correct position for your keyboard and mouse should be two inches on top of your lap, and you should use them while your elbows are near your sides at a 90-degree angle. Investing in an ergonomic keyboard and a mouse that fits your hand is also a good idea. Moreover, you should be able to reach your mouse without changing positions.
5. Your display should be at the appropriate height
Make sure you can see everything on the screen. The screen’s correct position should be from two to three inches beneath the top of the screen. You shouldn’t have to bend your neck to see the screen clearly.
Furthermore, the screen should be away at your arm’s length. You can reach the desired position using books. If you’re using a laptop, a laptop stand would be a good acquisition.
